black ethnic counterspaces

The existing research on Black student organizations focuses on them as safe spaces away the racial stressors that are present in the mainstream college environment (Tatum, 1997). The existing student organizations provide an alternative place in which to respond to and cope with their experiences of racism on campus (Carter, 2007). In addition to pan-ethnic Black student organizations, there exist groups focused on Caribbean and African student experiences. This study has two goals: First, to understand how these organizational meetings function as counter-spaces for their members, and second, to examine how the members choose and are supported by these groups.
